Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issues new guidelines related to eating fish concerning women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. The guidelines available via easy-to-read graphics and a full press release inform how to make the best choices in selecting fish that are both healthy and safe to eat.
Guidelines include three categories of fish, titled as “best choices, “good choices,” and “fish to avoid.” According to the joint FDA and EPA press release “fish in the “best choices” category make up nearly 90 percent of fish eaten in the United States.” For more information, local health department staff and other food safety partners are encouraged to read the Federal Register Notice Announcing the Advice, joint press release as well as view and share the related graphics.
