Final Recommendation Statement: PrEP for the Prevention of HIV Infection

Jun 11, 2019 | Kim Rodgers

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released today a final recommendation statement on preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the prevention of HIV infection. The Task Force found that clinicians should offer PrEP to persons at high risk for HIV, giving the recommendation an “A” grade. To view the recommendation and the evidence on which it is based, please go here. The final recommendation statement can also be found in the June 11 online issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

The recommendation, once implemented in 2021, will require insurers to cover PrEP with no cost sharing to patients. As noted in the USPSTF recommendation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that individuals taking PrEP receive medical services every three months that include HIV and STD screening, laboratory monitoring and adherence counseling.
