Smoke from wildfires in the southern plains spread this weekend through areas in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Missouri. Wildfires produce air pollution that can impact people’s health and other aspects of daily life. The increased frequency and intensity of wildfires in the United States are adversely affecting air quality and putting more people at a health risk from exposure to smoke. The US Environmental Protection Agency offers a suite of wildland fire resources that can assist public health professionals with development of health risk communications strategies to improve public health outcomes especially among those at highest risk.
