Webinar: PrEP and Youth: Opportunities for Increasing Equity

October 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 24 still comprise a disproportionate number of new HIV infections in the US. In May 2018, the FDA extended its approval of Truvada for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to include minors. This regulatory approval holds promise for improving access to PrEP for this priority population. However, significant barriers to PrEP awareness, uptake, and adherence remain for youth and must be addressed in order to achieve prevention goals set forth in the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

This webinar will review new recommendations for PrEP with youth put forward by the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and provide suggestions for policy and practice changes that support prevention equity for youth, particularly for young men who have sex with men of color. Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe existing disparities in HIV infection and PrEP utilization among youth
  • Summarize recommendations for addressing the PrEP needs of youth put forward by the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine
  • Name at least one effective strategy that supports equity in PrEP services for youth and can be applied to local PrEP programs and planning processes
