The Business Case for Protecting Children’s Environmental Health
July 16 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
In order to protect children’s environmental health, we need to marshal the engine of the economy to achieve environments in which children can thrive and enjoy abundant opportunity for building a sustainable, economically secure future. One aspect of the economy with significant implications for children’s health is product manufacturing and chemical safety. There are over 85,000 chemicals registered for use in the U.S. marketplace. A very small percentage of them have been tested for safety to human health. Many common consumer products contain harmful chemicals which can pose risks to children’s health during product use. In addition, the production, transport, and disposal of many products may also pose environmental health risks. There is a critical need for industry and businesses to apply a life cycle lens to assess products and their potential environmental impacts and harm to children’s health, and to place children at the center of decision-making.
While a growing number of businesses are working towards safer practices and materials, they are still in the minority. But adopting a commitment to prioritize children’s health in all practices not only feels good, it makes good business sense.
This webinar from Children’s Environmental Health Network will highlight a business membership organization and successful businesses that are leading the way to make changes in the marketplace. These visionary business leaders are working towards a robust economy that is centered around human health and equity and environmental sustainability.
