CDC Twitter Chat: Healthy and Safe Swimming Week
May 22 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The thirteenth annual Healthy and Safe Swimming Week will be celebrated on May 22-28, 2017. To kick off the week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is co-hosting a Twitter Chat with @CBSHealth on Monday, May 22 from 12:00-1:00 pm ET. The Twitter chat will focus on recent outbreaks of a diarrheal illness linked to swimming, and caused by Cryptosporidium. This parasite is spread when someone swallows water that has been contaminated with the fecal matter (poop) of an infected swimmer and is one of the leading causes of waterborne illness in the US.
During the chat, CDC will be sharing preliminary national outbreak numbers for 2016, compared with national outbreaks reported in 2013 and 2014. In addition, general information will be provided about Cryptosporidium in pools and what swimmers can do to protect themselves and their loved ones from germs in the water this summer. Join the chat by following the hashtag #HealthySwimChat and @CDCgov, @CDC_NCEZID, and @CBSHealth.
