5th Annual National African American Hepatitis C Action Day (NAAHCAD)

July 25

Tuesday, July 25, is the 5th Annual National African American Hepatitis C Action Day (NAAHCAD). On this day, the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLCA) and the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR) will cosponsor a call-in to legislators to spotlight the importance of health care for people living with or at risk for hepatitis C. If you believe that all people deserve hepatitis C prevention, education, and treatment services, contact your Senators and House members on Tuesday, July 25. Please see sample script below.

“Hello, my name is ______ and I’m a constituent of [member/Senator].

I am calling to let the [member/Senator] know that today is National African American Hepatitis C Action Day, and to use this opportunity to ask [her/him] to oppose the Better Care Reconciliation Act – or any similar bill – that would decrease access to care and treatment for people living with hepatitis C.

Nearly 4 million Americans have hepatitis C, and the virus disproportionately affects the African American community. Because of the Affordable Care Act, more African Americans have health care coverage, which has helped those with hepatitis C to get tested and treated. The Better Care Reconciliation Act would let insurers impose annual and lifetime limits and discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions like hepatitis C. The bill would also gut Medicaid and destroy access to hepatitis C treatment for the poor. We cannot afford to roll back the progress we’ve made in helping people to live longer, healthier lives.

I urge [member/Senator] to oppose the Better Care Reconciliation Act and any other bill that rips health care coverage away from people with hepatitis C. Thank you.”
