On March 9, 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognized the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the Accredited Third-Party Certification Program for a five-year period. ANSI is only the second accreditation body to receive such recognition under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Those recognized are able to accredit third-party auditors, which can then conduct food safety audits and provide certifications of foreign food facilities. Certifications can be used by food importers to become eligible for the Voluntary Qualified Importer Program (VQIP). Read the full FDA announcement here.
