The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun to test fresh cilantro, parsley and basil, as well as processed avocado and guacamole, for certain microbial contaminants. The sampling will help the FDA assess the rates of bacterial contamination in these items to help identify possible common factors among the positive samples. These items were chosen to sample because the herbs are typically consumed without having undergone a ‘kill step’, such as cooking to reduce or eliminate bacteria. A report will be released after the sampling and analysis is completed. Learn more here.
