Hidden Casualties Webinars: Local, State, & National Partners’ Responses to Infectious Disease Consequences of Opioid Epidemic

Feb 13, 2018 | Kim Rodgers

The opioid crisis in the United States has resulted in alarming increases in opioid use disorders, injection drug use, overdose deaths, and infectious diseases in communities across the United States. Fighting the opioid epidemic is a national priority at the highest levels of the Administration and President Trump has declared it a public health emergency. For all of these reasons, the federal government has mobilized to take action to address the opioid epidemic. But its impact on infectious diseases has not been fully understood. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been working to draw attention to these issues in a number of ways. Two upcoming webinars will provide an opportunity to hear important perspectives of leaders and partners from the field.

These webinars are a continuation of the discussion which began at the HHS event, Hidden Casualties: The Consequences of the Opioid Epidemic on the Spread of Infectious Disease and will explore the same themes and our evolving response to the opioid epidemic from the perspectives of national, state, county, and local organizations. Partners will discuss state and local impacts of the opioid epidemic on infectious diseases, challenges, steps taken to address these co-occurring problems, and opportunities that may inform other states and local partners working to address this multi-faceted challenge.
