The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) is committed to closing the knowledge gap that exists among our healthcare community about the unique health needs of Black LGBT patients. As such, NASTAD has announced the launch of two new continuing education modules, Whole Health Assessment 2.0 and PrEP 2.0 on His Health, a free, accredited and self-paced online learning platform for healthcare providers and public health professionals. His Health forms part of the Center for Engaging Black men who have sex with men (MSM) Across the Care Continuum (CEBACC), which is an online resource created in partnership with the Health Resources Services Administration’s HIV/AIDS Bureau. These trainings continually rank as popular resources and are designed by expert faculty to help medical and public health professionals deliver more holistic, affirming, and uplifting care for Black LGBTQ patient communities.
The previous modules covered topics on PrEP, Whole-Health Assessment, Transgender Health, and Linkage and Engagement. The two new modules are a continuation of the PrEP and Whole Health Assessment Module and they expand on the previous courses. The Whole Health Assessment 2.0 is led by Dr. Leo Moore, Dr. Quintin Robinson, Dr. Nathaniel Currie, and Terrance Moore and it provides myriad tools to help you better understand the intersecting issues that impact the overall physical, emotional and mental well-being of young Black (MSM). More specifically, the module delves into the recommended behavioral health assessments for Black MSM including screenings for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). Additionally, the trainers discuss behavioral and mental health disparities among this patient population, the importance of integrating discussions of sexual pleasure into provider-patient conversations and the myriad factors that affect engagement, linkage and retention to care among YBMSM.
The new PrEP 2.0 module is led by Dr. Theodore Hodge and Terrance Moore and it builds on the foundational concepts regarding PrEP introduced in the first module. This iteration of the PrEP course emphasizes the ongoing need for PrEP among Black MSM, articulates the supportive evidence for PrEP efficacy and utilization, and identifies disparities in PrEP eligibility and utilization. Both modules are accompanied by supplemental resources aimed to enhance your understanding about Black MSM health.
