On September 27, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) marked Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day with a “Dear Colleague” letter highlighting the importance of prevention and care in slowing the spread of HIV among gay and bisexual men. In particular, the letter indicates how antiretroviral therapy (ART) can preserve the health of people living with HIV and induce viral suppression to prevent the spread of the disease from an HIV-positive to HIV-negative partner. As the letter notes, “…people who take ART daily as prescribed and achieve and maintain an undetectable viral load have effectively no risk of sexually transmitting the virus to an HIV-negative partner.”
