NACCHO has created a portal for food safety professionals and other partners to share feedback related to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA’s) Menu Labeling Rule. In 2014, to tackle the nation’s high and rising rates of obesity, FDA issued this rule, which requires establishments serving hot food to make available calorie counts and other nutrition information to empower consumers to make informed food choices. In May 2017, under new administration leadership, the FDA delayed the compliance deadline for an additional year until May 2018.
The FDA is now accepting public comments for input on how the agency should approach potential changes to the regulation. Local health officials and other food safety partners are encouraged to use NACCHO’s portal to create their own letter and take action on FDA menu labeling. Click here to access the portal. The deadline to submit comments is July 3, 2017.
