CDC Releases 2018 Edition of the Travel Health Yellow Book

Jun 13, 2017 | Kim Rodgers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released the online 2018 edition of CDC Health Information for International Travel, commonly known as the Yellow Book. Completely revised every two years, the Yellow Book is the definitive guide for healthy international travel. The Yellow Book is written primarily for health professionals but is a useful resource for anyone traveling abroad.

The 2018 edition features significant revisions, new sections, and updates to important travel health recommendations. The Yellow Book provides travel health recommendations that help international travelers prepare for trips and stay healthy while abroad, such as when to get the recommended vaccines and medicines before departure and symptoms to watch for during and after travel.

New features in the 2018 edition include:

  • The latest information about infectious disease threats, including Zika, Ebola, and MERS
  • New cholera vaccine recommendations
  • Updated guidance for antibiotic use to treat travelers’ diarrhea
  • Travel health recommendations for Cuba and Burma (Myanmar)
  • Special considerations for specific types of travel, such as wilderness expeditions, work-related travel, and study abroad

3 things to know

  • Popular features from previous Yellow Book editions have been enhanced for 2018 including: sections on jet lag, cruise ship travel, traveling with disabilities, traveling with infants and children, and traveling with pets.
  • The content is available at CDC’s Travelers’ Health website, cdc.gov/yellowbook. For travelers and clinicians who need to access the Yellow Book on the go, a mobile app with the complete 2018 edition will soon be available. The Yellow Book is published in print by Oxford University Press and is available to order from their website or from most major online booksellers.
  • In addition to providing the Yellow Book, the CDC Travelers’ Health website lets travelers search by destination and find up to date information on how to prepare for healthy travel and what to do if sick or injured while traveling.
