Harvard Law School’s Food Law and Policy Clinic and the Natural Resources Defense Council recently released a joint report titled, Don’t Waste, Donate: Enhancing Food Donations Through Federal Policy. The report addresses a troubling disconnect between the approximate 62.5 million tons of annual food waste in the U.S., and the 42.2 million of Americans who simultaneously face food insecurity. One way to combat this issue is to divert safe, edible food from being wasted to individuals who face food insecurity. The authors of the report state that there are federal laws and policies in place to enhance food recovery, however, many of them are out of date. In an effort to address these gaps, the report provides recommendations for policy changes to enhance food donation. Click here to read the full report.
