In a recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the first state-specific rates of primary and secondary syphilis among men who have sex with men (MSM). According to this report, MSM account for over 60 percent of all early syphilis cases and rates among this population were over 100 times greater than those seen in women and men who have sex with women. These data highlight the staggering discrepancy of rates of syphilis borne by MSM and what states are hit hardest by these infections. This continues to be a population of interest for NACCHO and our members. This MMWR also included an analysis of HIV Services provided by State and Local STD Programs. This report emphasized the fact that STD programs often “provide integral HIV specific services” and that they play a crucial role in combating both the HIV and STD epidemics.
