The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) recently released a new report examining the health implications of a proposed trail, set to cover 1.7 miles across two Chicago-based communities. The assessment for this project was conducted by using a Health Impact Assessment (HIA).

Titled, Health Impact Assessment of the Proposed Englewood Line Trail, the report presents findings concluding that the Englewood Line Trail has potential to positively impact the health of local residents. Also included are key recommendations to ensure the trail’s health benefits are maximized while any health risks are minimized. These guidelines cover a wide range of topics including community safety, access to green space, exposure to traffic-related air pollution and brownfields, as well as economic and workforce development. As a result of the collaborative approach inherent to HIA, report findings and recommendations not only encompass valuable insight from CDPH and IPHI, but also the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) and a number of other community partners.
