CDC Releases the National Immunization Survey-Teen Results 2014

Aug 12, 2015 | Kate Drezner

On July 30, CDC announced the results of the 2014 National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen). Although the NIS-Teen 2014 data showed a slight increase in coverage in 2014 compared with 2013, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates remain low. Four out of ten adolescent girls and six out of ten adolescent boys still have not started the HPV vaccine series, which means that engaging the community to address barriers and increase HPV vaccination rates remains a priority.

In comparing 2013 and 2014, national coverage rates increased from 84.7% to 87.6% for Tdap, 76.6% to 79.3% for MCV, 56.7% to 60% for ≥1 HPV dose in females, and 33.6% to 41.7% for ≥1 HPV dose in males. Additionally, four of the eleven 2013 CDC funded Prevention and Public Health Fund HPV sites (Chicago, DC, Georgia, and Utah) saw significant increases in 1 or 3 dose HPV coverage in females, illustrating the impact of targeted HPV campaigns.

To check out your state’s rates and read the full results of the 2014 NIS-Teen, see the MMWR article.
