Fact Sheets: HIV and the Medicaid and Medicare Programs

Medicaid, the nation’s public insurance program for low income individuals, and Medicare, the federal health insurance program for those 65 and older and people with disabilities, together cover about half of all people with HIV in care. Over time, spending on HIV care and the number of beneficiaries with HIV have increased, as people with HIV are living longer and the costs of care have risen. Both programs offer services that are important to people with HIV, including prescription drug coverage. Two new Kaiser Family Foundation fact sheets provide an overview of the role of each program for people with HIV, including trends and characteristics of beneficiaries, spending, services and other issues.
