In his op-ed in The Hill, NACCHO’s Executive Director Dr. Hasbrouck comments on the dangers of cutting staff and government funding from local health departments. He states that America needs adequately staffed and funded local health departments to serve as the frontline public health responders to outbreaks of disease and disasters.
Alarmingly, the jobs of 51,700 professionals have been eliminated from local health departments across the United States and millions of dollars have been cut in government assistance since 2008. Dr. Hasbrouck calls on our elected representatives to strengthen our local health departments and invest in a healthier future for all Americans. Such deep cuts in funding and staffing endangers the health and safety of the American people as they compromise the ability of local health departments to provide critical services in protecting their communities from illness and injury.
