The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just released a new HIV surveillance supplemental report, Diagnoses of HIV Infection among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States and Dependent Areas, 2010-2014. Published on the heels of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey results, the report complements the 2014 HIV Surveillance Report and presents additional data of HIV diagnoses and prevalence of HIV infection among adolescents and young adults aged 13-24 years in the United States, and 6 U.S. dependent areas.
Understanding the sexual risk behaviors and the impact of HIV among different subgroups of young persons can help HIV programs focus on populations and areas at greatest need for HIV prevention and treatment services. With expanded HIV prevention outreach and education efforts, the goal is to keep a new generation of young people from becoming infected with HIV.
