The Network for Public Health Law recently released a new raw milk resource, “50 State Compilation: Raw Milk Statutes.” This document provides a list of links to current legislation on the sale of raw milk for each state.
Raw milk has been the cause of many outbreaks across the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 1,676 illnesses and two deaths resulting from raw milk consumption between 1998 and 2008. In addition, raw milk caused 82 percent of reported outbreaks from dairy products between 1973 and 2009.
Despite these statistics, many states are considering legalizing the sale of raw milk, making it more accessible. Currently, legislation related to raw milk varies widely between states. Some states allow residents to buy raw milk from retail food businesses, while others only allow people to acquire raw milk from animal-sharing programs.
