NACCHO has recently updated its Brownfields policy statement providing guidance and recommendations for local health departments interested in brownfield redevelopment in their jurisdictions. Brownfields are defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” Communities with brownfield sites tend to have disproportionate environmental, social, and health disparities.
NACCHO’s policy statement recommends that local health departments partner with governmental and non-governmental agencies seeking to evaluate the health implications of brownfields, apply for brownfields funding from the EPA or work with a funded partner to provide health monitoring services, and utilize health impact assessment (HIA) resources and tools to facilitate brownfield redevelopment processes.
NACCHO positions are determined and approved by the Board of Directors, and developed through member participation in advisory groups. The policy statement development process guides NACCHO’s public health advocacy work. Visit NACCHO’s website for more information about policy and position statements.
