CDC Releases 2020 Immunization Schedules

Feb 04, 2020 | Kimberly Sharpe-Scott

Following the release of new recommendations issued by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the 2020 child/adolescent and adult immunization schedules.

The 2020 adult immunization schedule includes several updates and additions. Adults up to age 26 who are not fully vaccinated should receive catch-up HPV vaccination. Adults aged 27 through 45 who aren’t fully vaccinated, CDC recommends shared decision making for the HPV vaccine. Shared clinical decision making is recommended for PCV13 vaccination consideration in persons aged 65 years and older who do not have an immunocompromising condition, cerebrospinal fluid leak, or cochlear implant and who have not previously received PCV13. The 2020 children and adolescent schedule provides important updates including recommendations for hepatitis A and Tdap vaccines.

There are many resources available to assist in accessing the schedules and understanding the new recommendations. Visit the CDC Immunization Schedules webpage to view the schedules, full recommendations, and resources, including a parent-friendly schedule and new catchup schedule job aids. On February 6, the child/adolescent and adult immunization schedule announcements will also be published in the MMWR. Additionally, the American College of Physicians has published the schedule and an article on the changes to the 2020 adult immunization schedule in the Annals of Internal Medicine .The American Academy of Pediatrics has also published a policy statement regarding the release of the 2020 child/adolescent immunization schedule and schedule changes in Pediatrics This information is posted on AAP News, Red Book Online, and HealthyChildren.org.
