Researchers at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) were awarded a grant by National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to explore the efficacy of the vaccine, Bexsero, in protecting against infection with bacteria that causes gonorrhea. Bexsero is already used to protect against meningitis. A “vaccine for this infection could enhance the reproductive and sexual health of millions of people globally. It’s really exciting,” said Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, MPH, director of UAB’s Division of Infectious Diseases and principal investigator of the study.
