In a new commentary in Clinical Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health (NIH) experts suggest that ending HIV will require optimizing implementation of existing HIV prevention and treatment tools, as well as continued development of new interventions. Anthony S Fauci, MD, Director of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and colleagues say that implementation gaps exist at all stages of the HIV care continuum and offer lessons from cities such as San Francisco as frameworks for overcoming these gaps. The article also outlines new research into approaches to achieve durable control of HIV without daily antiretroviral therapy (ART).
