CDC Launches Redesigned Foodborne Outbreak Tool

Oct 30, 2015 | Katie Regan

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) redesigned an online tool that makes it easier to search data on foodborne disease outbreaks. CDC estimates that 1 in 6 Americans suffer foodborne illness every year.

The Foodborne Outbreak Online Database Tool (FOOD Tool) includes interactive features such as maps, graphs, and tables. Users can search outbreak data from 1998-2014 by state, food, or germ. New features also allow users to search data by specific foods and ingrediants, view a #quick stats” display and get case counts for multistate outbreaks.

FOOD Tool’s data come from CDC’s Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System, which captures information on foodborne outbreaks caused by enteric bacterial, viral, parasitic, and chemical agents. CDC analyzes this outbreak data, which is reported by state, local, and territorial public health agencies, to understand the impact of foodborne illness of public health.
