The opioid overdose epidemic in America continues to evolve and become more complex. States, territories, and localities need access to complete and timely data on nonfatal and fatal drug overdoses to understand the scope and direction of the evolving overdose epidemic. Given the need for an interdisciplinary, comprehensive, and cohesive public health approach, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released funding opportunity, Overdose Data to Action (RFA-CE19-1904). State, territorial, and select county and city or township health departments are eligible to apply. PLEASE NOTE: Local health departments must serve at least 700,000 people in order to be eligible for this opportunity.
This funding opportunity builds upon previous CDC programs focused on opioid overdose and injury prevention:
- Data-Driven Prevention Initiative (CDC-RFA-CE16-1606)
- Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention for States (CDC-RFA-CE15-1501)
- Enhanced State Surveillance of Opioid-Involved Morbidity and Mortality (CDC-RFA-CE16-1608)
- Cooperative Agreement for Emergency Response: Public Health Crisis Response – Opioid Epidemic (CDC-RFA-TP18-1802)
- Core State Violence and Injury Prevention Program (CDC-RFA-CE16-1602)
Overdose Data to Action offers funds over a three-year period. This funding opportunity will support collection of high quality, more comprehensive, and timelier data on morbidity and mortality, and use of those data to inform prevention and response efforts. Several resources are available to assist jurisdictions with the application process, including checklists, budget one-pagers, and applicant webinars.
