CDC Dear Colleague Letter: The Impact of Viral Suppression

Nov 07, 2018 | Kim Rodgers

The Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) provides a comprehensive system of HIV care and treatment services to people living with HIV (PLWH) who are uninsured and underserved. In 2016, 84.9 percent of RWHAP clients receiving HIV medical care were virally suppressed. HRSA HAB knows that many RWHAP providers share messages regarding viral suppression with your patients. To support this effort, today HRSA released a Dear Colleague Letter on the impact of viral suppression.

Several large studies have demonstrated that PLWH who have consistent viral suppression do not sexually transmit HIV. This letter outlines recommendations for HRSA’s RWHAP recipients and subrecipients as you incorporate messages on the impact viral suppression has on HIV transmission. HRSA strongly encourages RWHAP recipients, subrecipients, planning bodies, and providers to leverage their expertise and RWHAP infrastructure to incorporate viral suppression messaging in service delivery settings where PLWH are engaged.
