New World Health Organization Guidelines on ART and PrEP

At the end of September, the World Health Organization issued an “Early Release Guideline” on when to start antiretroviral therapy and on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. This document recommends the initiation of ART in adults living with HIV, regardless of CD4 cell count, and offer of PrEP as a prevention option to all people at substantial risk of acquiring HIV. The CDC supported the release of these guidelines and called them “a major step forward in the global fight against HIV”. View the early release guideline here.
