FDA Process to Review and Modernize Standards of Identity for Dairy Products

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gotlieb, M.D., released a statement on the FDA’s plan to update standards for labeling plant-based foods with traditional dairy names such as “milk” and “cheese.” Many plant-based foods are being positioned in the marketplace as substitutes for standardized dairy products.

Gottlieb explains that this will be an active public process for reviewing the standard and how consumers understand the use of terms like milk on both animal-derived and plant-based products.
