Funding Opportunity: AIDS United: HIV Hurricane Relief Effort

Jul 17, 2018 | Kim Rodgers

In response to the destruction from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria occurring across Southern states and U.S. territories in 2017, AIDS United was moved to act and help address the growing needs of agencies serving the HIV community.

AIDS United has made funds available through this request for applications (RFA) to assist in meeting the immediate, urgent, and ongoing needs of HIV organizations serving people living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS in these regions. The intent of the funding is to ensure HIV-related agencies impacted by these storms are able to provide care and support services to the HIV community in their areas.

The effort was started through AIDS United’s rapid response structure, in partnership with NMAC, and established through the Southern HIV Impact Fund, a collaborative effort coordinated by Funders Concerned About AIDS, and established with generous support from Gilead Sciences, Ford Foundation, Elton John AIDS Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, and ViiV Healthcare. Funders supporting the HIV Hurricane Relief Effort also include the H. van Ameringen Fund, the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin, Howard Brown Health Center, and individual donors.

The main priorities for funding are to support the following activities:

  • Organizational recovery – These grants support rebuilding and reconstruction of organizations serving the HIV community.
  • Client recovery – These grants fund the provision of basic needs and support services for people living with HIV and those most affected by HIV.
  • Organizational preparedness – These grants cover expenses including, but not limited to, solar power, generators, hurricane-proof windows, new roofs, or computer back-up systems.
  • Client preparedness – These grants cover client-centered expenses including, but not limited to, preparedness kits and preparedness plans crafted in consultation with case management staff.

Eligibility

  • Requests for funding will only be accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed from agencies serving people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS who reside in or have been displaced from the affected regions.
  • Agencies must have 501(c)(3) status, or have a qualified fiscal sponsor.
  • Applicants (or their fiscal sponsor) must have the capacity to receive award funds electronically or via FedEx.
