Overview of the Pest and Rodent Control Tour of the French Quarter at NACCHO Annual

Jul 23, 2018 | Michelle Shapiro

Many NACCHO Annual participants took advantage of opportunities to tour the historic French Quarter and learn about the rich culture of this renowned New Orleans neighborhood. Only one tour focused exclusively on the pests, termites, and rodents roaming the streets and infiltrating buildings.

The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTCB) led a pest control tour for over fifty NACCHO Annual attendees in the French Quarter.

Led by NOMTCB Director Claudia Riegel, the tour took participants to well known locations in the French Quarter to discuss solutions to difficult pest challenges. The tour guides described challenges and solutions to pests such as cockroaches, flies, termites, rodents, and mosquitoes.

“Pest control issues are people issues,” explained Riegel as she explained the importance of using covered trash receptacles on street corners and emptying trash cans regularly.

Local NBC affiliate WDSU News ran a story on the tour, including interviews with Riegel, NACCHO Program Analyst Grace McClain, and NACCHO member Phil Maytubby, director of public health protection for the Oklahoma City County Health Department. Watch the story here.

The NOMTCB is holding their annual three-day Pest Control Academy this October, and they are holding their first ever Rodent Control Academy in September. Learn more here.
