CDC Report on Outbreaks Associated with Untreated Recreational Water

CDC released an MMWR report on Outbreaks Associated with Untreated Recreational Water (e.g., in lakes, rivers and oceans). During 2000–2014, public health officials from 35 states and Guam voluntarily reported 140 outbreaks resulting in at least  4,958 cases of disease and two deaths. Enteric pathogens caused a majority of the illnesses investigated (87%), including norovirus (47%), Shigella (12%), Cryptosporidium (10%) and E. coli (5%). Overall, the majority of outbreaks started during June–August (81%).
